Chapter 19

The next time Kitchner opened his eyes, he quickly shut them again, being blinded by white light. He heard a door open, then close. Footsteps approached him. He slowly opened his eyes again, studying his surroundings. What blinded him was the brightness of the white walls of the room he was in. The footsteps belonged to a woman he didn’t know. She looked to be about forty-five or so. She turned toward him, and saw him watching her.

“Hello, there,” she said. “How are you feeling today?”

“Better than I was. Who are you, where am I, and how long have I been here?”

“My name is Emma Klein, you’re at my brother Phil’s house, and you’ve been here for four days.”

“Four days?” he asked, incredulously. “How have I been here four days?”

“You’ve been unconscious since you arrived. And that was four days ago. Mrs. Blaine has been checking in on you, changing your dressing, cleaning your wound, and wearing herself out in the process. Yesterday, I finally made her go lie down and get some sleep. I’ve been taking care of you since then.”

“Wow. Four days.” He tried moving his left arm, and was able to without as much pain. Emma watched him and said, “I was a physical therapist. While you’ve been out, I moved your arm around some each day to keep the muscles limber, careful not to do it too much and tear your stitches again. You did a pretty good job of that yourself.”

He smiled sheepishly. “Yeah, I guess I did, at that.”

“The Blaines told us what you did. That was pretty brave.”

“I just did what I had to do. Is Matt around?”

“Yes, he and Phil just got back from the barn. I’ll go get him.”

“Thank you.”

She smiled. “You’re welcome.”

Blaine came in the room a few minutes later. “Welcome back to the land of the living,” he said.

“I was told I’ve been out for four days. Has it really been four days?”

“Yes, it has. And it was kind of touch and go there for the first couple. Gave us all quite a scare. By the way, your black stud is in the barn, along with the others we’ve collected. We haven’t heard a peep out of the Renegades since you dropped their boss.”

Kitchner heard a man clear his throat. He looked, and there stood the biggest man Kitchner had ever seen in his life. He was even bigger than Little John. He was so big that he had to not only duck to get through the doorway, he also had to turn his body so he entered the room one shoulder at a time. Kitchner just stared.

“This is Fritz,” he heard Blaine saying. “He’s been taking care of your horse for you.”

Kitchner finally found his voice. “Thank you. I appreciate that.”

Fritz beamed. “Iss my pleasure,” he said with a heavy German accent. “I vill take care of him vile you get better.” The look on Kitchner’s face made Fritz laugh. “Missing me vould be like missing a solar eclipse, vould it not?” Kitchner just nodded his head.
